Foul weather postpones Brandeis-Warren until Friday
MysanantonioOther than a few dedicated parents and game-crew workers, there weren’t a whole lot of people around to watch the Brandeis-Warren matchup Thursday at Farris Stadium.
The game was played in the middle of severe thunderstorm with gusting winds and the occasional lightning delay before it was eventually postponed until 4 p.m. Friday.
The District 28-6A game will resume with 9:26 left in the third quarter and Brandeis leading 27-0 with a chance to make it 28 pending an extra point.
Broncos junior quarterback Jordan Battles opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Xavier Lopez’s extra-point kick made it 7-0 with less than six minutes left in the first quarter.
Battles added another rushing TD in the second, powering his way through a couple of Warriors arm-tackles. Lopez’s successful PAT put the Broncos in front 14-0 with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
A poor snap on a Warren punt attempt led to a 10-yard loss and gave Brandeis solid field position with just over a minute left in the second. On the first play after the miscue, senior Broncos running back Corion Holmes raced to the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown. Lopez’s PAT made it 21-0 at intermission.
The start of the third brought a torrential downpour, but the worsening conditions didn’t stop Brandeis from moving the ball. From his own 32-yard-line, Battles took the snap and patiently followed his blockers toward the left sideline before turning up field on a 68-yard TD run. Before the extra-point attempt, lightning moved into the area and forced another weather delay, which ultimately led to the postponement.
“We treated it like ‘Big Brother’ — expect the unexpected,” Brandeis coach David Branscom said. “I think we’re trained pretty well in controlling what we can control. I think we fought through some adversity tonight, had a little fun in the weather. I’m pretty pleased with what I saw. Obviously, once we got rolling on offense and stopped shooting ourselves in the foot, we were able to let our players make plays. We’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”
Battles wasn’t fazed by the inclement weather, finishing Thursday with 14 carries for 161 yards and three TDs. He also added 39 yards through the air.
