Tony Cascarino reveals he couldn’t even watch Watford vs Chelsea after ‘extraordinary’ penalty decision

TalksportTony Cascarino was left so fed up by VAR during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Watford that he couldn’t watch any longer.

The Blues were forced to survive a late fightback at Vicarage Road when the hosts were awarded a contentious penalty for a foul by Jorginho on Gerard Deulofeu.

Contact looked minimal and on-field referee Anthony Taylor originally decided against awarding a spot-kick, before video assistant referee Mike Dean overturned the decision from Stockley Park.

“I switched off the game because I was so angry at the penalty,” Cascarino said on the Weekend Sports Breakfast.

“I just couldn’t believe what I watched, to be honest. I found it an extraordinary decision.

“It really gets me how people in studios in Stockley Park are making decisions on football when it’s just common sense that it was never, ever a penalty.”

And Watford wasn’t the only scene of VAR controversy in the Premier League yesterday.

Liverpool had to stage a dramatic comeback to beat Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to late goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane.

But before that, the Reds were denied an earlier equaliser when Roberto Firmino’s armpit was ruled offside by VAR.

Jurgen Klopp said: “When we talk about serious moments, very important moments in football, it’s not right to sit here and everyone wants to laugh about it.

“It is not to laugh about. It is too serious. Managers get sacked for losing football games.

“They just have to clarify it. I am not saying anyone is doing it on purpose.”
