? Could the Broncos benefit from familiarity with the Bears

Good morning, Broncos Country!

Milehighreport

There is always give-and-take with familiarity.

That is especially true when it comes to sports and the NFL, in particular. That’s on full display today when the Denver Broncos host the Chicago Bears. Broncos head coach and defensive coordinator Ed Donatell know the Bears and that very good defense. That could become incredibly helpful for Joe Flacco, Rich Scangarello and Denver’s offense in trying to beat one of the best defense’s in the league. Fangio and Donatell also know Mitchell TrubiskyMatt Nagy and the Bears offense (somewhat).

“It goes both ways,” Donatell told the media earlier this week before practice. “The biggest example is, you’ve been on a practice field with those guys, and, sometimes you’ll exchange information. Those are little tidbits, but it’s really personnel-wise. When I’m describing the strengths and weaknesses of their offensive talent, you really know it because you’ve seen it every day, so both. That’s an advantage for us.”

In what will determine this game, the Broncos offense still has to go out and execute against the Chicago defense, but knowing some of the tendencies the players have could open some windows of attack. However, with a new defensive coordinator in Chuck Pagano, some of that could change. When it comes to an advantage, coaches and players will take anything they can get.

“(Fangio) talked to us about the players and everything, but they have a new scheme, so we could add information to the strengths and weaknesses of players,” Donatell said. “But that’s about as far as it went.”

As for how much help Denver’s defense could benefit from Fangio and Donatell facing the Bears offense in practice last year, Fangio shot it down. But Fangio knows how to put forth a great plan. As our Jeff Essary talked about in his tale of the tape story on Saturday, Fangio and the defensive staff adjusted some in the second half against the Oakland Raiders, and the issues on display last Monday are fixable.

“It’s not a whole lot, really,” Fangio said. “I was only there with them one year in their current offensive system. I don’t think it’s a tremendous advantage, other than knowing the players.”

Rise up

Dalton Risner is going to be a special player for the Broncos.

In his first game for Denver, the rookie left guard had a great game. Now he gets to build on that in his first regular-season game as a member of the team he grew up rooting up for. Talk about an unbelievable moment. It’s not often a rookie offensive lineman becomes a difference maker for his team, let alone in the first few games of his career. Risner has that potential and will be extremely important today against the Bears nasty and extremely talented front seven.
